Bijvoorbeeld Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray London Dry, Beefeater of Gordon’s.

- Lichte tonics, minder zoet: Fever-Tree Light of Double Dutch Skinny Tonic.
- Aromatische tonics: Fever-Tree Mediterranean, zachter en kruidiger, Fever-Tree Elderflower met vlierbloesem, of Schweppes Premium Mixer Pink Pepper.

Combinaties die werken
| Gin | Tonic | Garnering |
|---|---|---|
| London dry (Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray) | Indian tonic | limoen of citroenschil |
| Hendrick’s | Indian tonic of Elderflower | schijfje komkommer |
| Gin Mare | Mediterranean tonic | takje rozemarijn of blaadje basilicum |
| Malfy Con Arancia | Indian of Mediterranean tonic | sinaasappelschil |
A gin and tonic is simple: gin, tonic, ice and a garnish. That is exactly why every part counts. Here is how to pair the two, and how to serve them well.
The main families of gin
- London dry: the classic, dry style led by juniper. For example Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray London Dry, Beefeater or Gordon’s.
- Floral and fresh: cucumber, rose, flowers. Hendrick’s is the best-known example.
- Citrus: lemon, orange or lime up front, such as Malfy Con Arancia or Tanqueray Rangpur Lime.
- Mediterranean and herbal: olive, basil, thyme and rosemary, such as Gin Mare.
- Belgian gins: the range has many, such as Filliers Dry 28, Copperhead, Gin de Namur or Liegin.

The tonic matters as much as the gin
Tonic owes its bitterness to quinine. In a gin and tonic it often fills three quarters of the glass: a flat or overly sweet tonic spoils a good gin.
- Indian tonic, the classic: Schweppes Tonic, Fever-Tree Tonic, Double Dutch Indian Tonic or London Essence Indian Tonic. The safe choice with a London dry.
- Light tonics, less sweet: Fever-Tree Light or Double Dutch Skinny Tonic.
- Aromatic tonics: Fever-Tree Mediterranean, softer and more herbal, Fever-Tree Elderflower, or Schweppes Premium Mixer Pink Pepper.

Pairings that work
| Gin | Tonic | Garnish |
|---|---|---|
| London dry (Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray) | Indian tonic | lime or lemon peel |
| Hendrick’s | Indian tonic or Elderflower | slice of cucumber |
| Gin Mare | Mediterranean tonic | sprig of rosemary or a basil leaf |
| Malfy Con Arancia | Indian or Mediterranean tonic | orange peel |
| Fruity or pink gins | light tonic | a few red berries |
The garnish should echo an aroma of the gin, not drown it.
Serving
- The ratio: 1 part gin to 3 parts tonic, about 5 cl of gin to 15 cl of tonic. Serve the rest of the 20 cl bottle on the side so guests can adjust it to taste.
- Plenty of ice: fill the glass (a balloon glass or a tall glass) with ice. The more ice, the colder the drink stays and the slower it dilutes.
- Cold tonic, in a small bottle: one 20 cl bottle opened per glass keeps all its fizz.
- Pour gently, down a bar spoon, to keep the bubbles.
For your menu
Three or four gin and tonics are enough to start: a classic with a London dry, a floral one, a citrus one and a Belgian gin. Then add what your guests ask for.
Gins and tonics go into the same crate: gins are under spirits, tonics under soft drinks. You need a trade account to order. For the rest of the fridge, see the soft drinks a bar needs.
